I just had a call with one of my new clients and I was reminded of this thing that I just keep seeing happen too many times in business.
Before I get into this, let me state that I’m a performance and mindset coach. I help people rearrange stuff in their head, get their shit together so they can actually be better.
It’s my job to be able to see past the norms and see the ‘why’s’ into what our results are.
I’ve been seeing this thing happen more and more where people are unwilling to invest in themselves as their first investment; especially in their business.
They think that what they need to do is invest in their business first, not themselves.
Whether it’s the copy on their website or their logo needs to be different, or their funnel sucks, or (fill in the blank) They think “I’ve got to do all this stuff to get my business up to speed.”
But what they’re not doing is investing in themselves first.
See, if you’re a business owner, you are your business.
If you redo your copy or your funnel or whatever and you don’t have your shit together?
That’s like going and buying a new dress when you’re fat, thinking it’s going to make you feel better but you know you need to get in shape.
It’s the wrong move.
You need to focus on the health of your mindset, skillsets, and habits as the main person in your business before you go invest anything further.
When you walk into your business, you are what facilitates everything.
It’s your creativity. It’s your vision. It’s your execution.
If the “you” part of your business is all tweaked in the head that’s where you need to start.
If you’re inner-critic is reminding you that you’re not worth…
If you’re out of shape in an unhealthy way…
If your relationships are messed up…
If you’re disconnected from your purpose…
If you can’t handle your life in a balanced and effective way…
… and then you go into your business and think, “Oh, I need to change my logo. That’s gonna fix all my problems in my business,”
That’s not how it works.
It’s not how it’s ever worked. It’s not how it will ever work.
My encouragement to you is to stop looking for external validation for why your business doesn’t work and look at you.
Look at your mindset.
Look at your skill sets.
Look at your habits.
If you aren’t navigating through your life successfully on your own, your business is never going to reflect that in a way that’s sustainable.
Let me repeat that.
Your business will never be successful in a way that’s sustainable.
Sure, we’ve all met those idiots that can make a bunch of money, but then they burn everything to the ground while they’re doing that and they leave a pile of rubble in their wake.
I’m not talking about that type of living.
I’m talking about a life where you’re happy, healthy, whole and you run a successful business.
If you don’t take the “you” part of your business seriously, everything else is just window dressing. It’s not going to fix it. No amount of change in copy or logo or colors or copy or funnels will fix it.
It’s like putting lipstick in a pig, or a ribbon on a turd.
Anyway, I was listening to this new client of mine talk about his challenges it was heartbreaking. He’d just gotten into a bunch of debt to redo a funnel that he doesn’t need while he’s just now getting to fixing all the “you” stuff he’d been putting off.
He says to me, “I wish I would have met you two months ago.”
I do too. But getting started now is just as effective.
The point of this post is to make sure to have the proper order of things.
Do it right. Fix the “you” part of your business first before you invest further into anything.
If you do?
When you are at your peak in your business, your success is imminent.
It is inevitable.
It can’t be denied.
When you show up in that place of power, with a success mindset, solid skill sets, and sound habits, everything else is easier.
At that point, the road to success is paved.
It’s not some rocky, bumpy trail anymore.
It’s a superhighway. You get to your destination very quickly and more efficiently.
